A few weeks ago, we mentioned that we would share our experiences of one of the most iconic things to do in Lisbon. As soon as you step out onto the streets of the Portuguese capital, you'll notice the little yellow trams rattling through the streets. However there is one tram that surpasses all others, and that is Tram 28!
If you haven´t been to Lisbon, you may not know that the city is built on seven hills. You don´t always have to climb the hills though, as there is a fabulous transport system which not only serves locals well, but also provides tourists with a great way to see the city.
Tram 28 offers the ultimate sightseeing ride, and is just one of several vintage trams from the 1930s that trundle through the Lisbon streets. Line 28 was inaugurated in 1914, and has survived the rise of the car and bus because it is to this day the best way to squeeze through the narrow streets and tricky corners of the older districts of Lisbon.
It runs between Martim Moniz (in the historic centre) and Campo de Ourique, but you can pick it up at any point. Try to get a seat by the window to enjoy the views – if the tram looks to busy (it is very popular!), just wait for the next one so you can make the most of the trip.
The wooden interiors are beautiful, and there is capacity for about 20 seated, and 38 standing passengers. If you end up being one of those standing, our advice is to hold on tight!
You can take the tram up to the castle, and the imposing Sé de Lisboa (Lisbon´s cathedral), and it also passes through many of the main districts of Lisbon. The best part is when the tram starts climbing to the Alfama district. If you lean out of the window here you could almost reach into people´s houses, and that is no exaggeration!
The first tram leaves at 6am, and they run approximately every ten minutes until around 11pm. We don't feel a trip to Lisbon is complete without a trip on Tram 28 - is an experience that should certainly not to be missed!
