No trip to the Douro Valley is truly complete without taking to its waters, and our two-hour boat journey from Pinhão proved just that. As the engine hummed to life and we set off down the shimmering river, we were immediately struck by the serene beauty surrounding us.

The Douro is famous for its terraced vineyards, but nothing prepares you for the breathtaking sight of those grape-laden terraces stretching all the way from the riverbanks to the tops of the rolling hills. It’s a landscape so picturesque it feels almost otherworldly—a living postcard of Portugal's wine country.

As we glided along, the crew offered everyone a shot of port wine. Now, drinking port at 10 in the morning might raise an eyebrow or two, but we were on holiday — and when in the Douro, you don’t say no to port! The rich, warming sip added a touch of indulgence to our morning and a hearty laugh among fellow passengers.

The tranquility of the river, coupled with the dramatic scenery, makes this boat trip an absolute must. It's a chance to truly appreciate the craftsmanship behind the Douro’s famous wines, where the grape terraces seem to defy gravity as they climb the steep hillsides.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a nature lover, or just looking for a unique way to experience the valley, hop on a boat from Pinhão. And don’t be shy about enjoying that morning port when you’re on Douro time!
