Everyone needs a change of scenery every now and then, and recently we hopped across the border to the charming spanish town of Ayamonte. It's right on the Guadiana River, making it practically wink across the water at Portugal! One of the quirkiest things about crossing the border like that is that you suddenly lose an hour, given the time difference between Portugal and Spain!

Ayamonte has a rich history as a strategic coastal town, dating back to Roman times and later thriving under Moorish rule. Its position on the Guadiana River made it a hub for trade and cultural exchange between Spain and Portugal. One of the nicest things to do is to wander into the Plaza de la Laguna - the main square and the town’s social heart. Beautiful palms, shaded benches, locals laughing over café con leche (or more commonly an Estrella beer!), and a parade of freshly made tapas dancing across tables.

It's lovely just settling in and ordering some patatas bravas, jamón ibérico, and a couple of croquetas while you people watch. But beware: when those little plates start showing up, it’s nearly impossible to stop!

Ayamonte is a lovely place to spend a couple of days wandering the little streets, and enjoying the shops and tapas. The journey back to Portugal is not long one, and re-adjusting your watch can feel like another quirky souvenir of the trip! But why rush? Grab an extra churro and one last café con leche before you cross the river. You’ll be an hour younger on the other side, but Ayamonte will still be there waiting, tapas in hand, whenever you decide to return!
