The land of chicken piri piri

Today's blog post comes with a warning - it may make your mouth water! If you've ever been to Portugal on holiday, the chances are you will have tasted piri piri chcken. That delicious meat popped onto a hot grill and brushed with the spicy sauce that makes the flavour quite unique.

Each restaurant has its own variations of the sauce, which has been around since the 15th century when Portuguese colonists first stumbled upon the chilli pepper when travelling overseas.

It is normally a wonderful mixture of garlic, olive oil, salt, and chilli, but many restaurants also add their own secret ingredients, making each dish completely individual. While it has become popular all over the world, we believe only one country does it right and that, of course, is Portugal!

A trip to Guia, where piri piri was reportedly first served, is a must. One of our favourite restaurants is O Teodósio, which proudly calls itself "Rei Dos Frangos'' - king of chickens. It's no surprise that it does - each day they serve around 2,500 customers!

Don't bother asking for a menu here - just ask for piri piri, batatas fritas and salada, and enjoy the juicy chicken, chips and yummy salad that turns up. The brave among you may even have the guts to ask for extra piri piri sauce!

Now we're in Portugal full time, we have embarked on a quest for perfection. We have decided to try each and every tiny little churrasqueira (a word for a place that serves grilled or barbequed meat) in the hunt for the best piri piri ever. It certainly isn't a chore, and instead one of the most enjoyable treasure hunts we've ever been on! If you have a favourite piri piri place in Portugal, please share your secrets!
