The end of the world....

You may never have heard of Cabo de São Vicente, but right up until the end of the 14th century, many believed this windswept headland was the end of the world! It is the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, and can be found a few kilometres northwest of Sagres in the Algarve.

The lighthouse is iconic, and can be seen in many incredible photographs taken when the waves are at their most ferocious, and frightening. Safeguarding one of the world's most hectic and dangerous shipping lanes, it is a working lighthouse.

Its powerful white beam be seen from 60 miles out at sea, which makes it one of the most powerful in Portugal, and the second most powerful in Europe after Phare du Creach in Brittanny.

Henry the Navigator is said to have founded a nautical school here, and the spot is thought to have played an important role in the discovery of new worlds during the 15th century age of discovery.

Looking out over the jagged cliffs towards the huge expanse of ocean is a magical sight. The cliffs rise 60 meters from the fierce waves, and you should keep your eyes peeled for brave fishermen who scale the cliffs to fish from a great height. Heading to Cabo de São Vicente is a must at any time of year, and while it can be quite ghostly foggy winter day it is simply stunning with the radiant Algarvian blue sky behind it.
