Setting sail for a new life

I remember making the booking for our ferry back in April. At the time it felt like a distant dream; but now it is very much reality...and the way we begin our journey to Portugal! We have driven down to the Algarve in the past and (if you have the time) it can be a wonderful part of any holiday, but this time we are driving with a real purpose - heading down to the place we will now call home.

If you've never driven down to Portugal, we believe the best way to do it is to let the ferry do a chunk of the work for you! The route from Plymouth to Santander takes you farthest South; meaning less driving, and a lengthy crossing where you can fully relax. It takes 23 hours, but it really seems to fly by.

We boarded around 2pm, and spent the first hour on deck watching the shore of the UK fade into the distance - reality really did kick in at this point that our adventure was beginning after months of dreaming what it would feel like! There was a great moment when a group of people on jet-skis followed in the wake of the ferry - it was as if they were giving us a great send off...even if they were really just having fun!

We booked a four berth external cabin with a window so that we could make the most of the views, and there was also a small TV in so we could relax away from other people on the ferry.

The food on board was fantastic - as you can see from the photo....it was like artwork, and just as tasty as it looks!

The beds in the cabin were incredibly comfy, and the gentle rocking of the boat induced sleep straight away (or was that the wine?), even though we were so excited!

The next morning we awoke to blue skies, so enjoyed some fresh air on deck before breakfast. Before we knew it, we were in Santander - and it was so exciting to catch the first glimpse of the Spanish port after more than a day at sea. The adventure starts here!
