If you've never been to a market while visiting Portugal, then you're really missing out! Gypsy markets; flea markets and farmers markets are held all across Portugal and sell everything from sheep to shoes!
One of our favourite things to do at the weekend is to visit the local farmers market in Lagos. As a result of the restrictions surrounding the pandemic, it has moved to a larger outdoor location meaning more people can pick up their fruit and vegetables each week.
When we used to live in the UK, we'd yearn for the juicy plum tomatoes that are full of flavour instead of the watery versions that were in the supermarkets. Everything just tastes so much better, and it's lovely to see the little old ladies and men that are selling the fruit from their land for a few cents.
That's one of the most surprising things about the market. Artisan fairs can sometimes see you pay more for great quality, but here you can buy all your fruit; vegetables, herbs and spices for the week for less than €5! You can pick up piri piri chillies to make your own spicy oil; there are fabulous herbs mixed with salt for cooking, and all the fruit and veg you can think of.
One of the nicest things is that all the produce is seasonal, and we're really looking forward to seeing just what's available in the coming months in our first full year in Portugal.
If you find yourself in Lagos, the market is on each Saturday from 8am-2pm. We guarantee it will be one of the highlights of your holiday!
