One of the best ways to while away a few hours in the Winter in the Algarve is to head for a long walk on a sunny day. You can't beat a bit of blue sky and heat at this time of the year to warm the soul, and one of our favourite places to head for is the triangulation point in Luz.
The trig point was used back in the day for surveying purposes but is now used by hikers for navigation. It's called Marco Geodésico da Atalaia, and is 109 meters high. While getting to this point feels like an achievement (the hill is pretty steep at times!) the best is yet to come.
At the top, you are treated to an amazing panoramic view of the town; the cliffs, and the sea beyond. Only from up here can you really appreciate the beautiful colours of the sea, as it goes from deep blue to turquoise when it reaches the sandy shores.
From here, if you want a longer walk, you can take the rest of the trail that goes all the way to Porto do Mos, along some beautiful cliffs and with some amazing views. However even this section of the walk gives you a rewarding sight from the summit. Even more rewarding is the cold beer waiting for you at one of the lovely bars in Luz when you get back down to the seaside afterwards!
