Last weekend we enjoyed a grand adventure in Lagos at the Festival of the Discoveries. For a few days, the streets of Lagos were transformed into a vibrant 16th-century scene, celebrating the city’s pivotal role in the Age of Discoveries. This year’s theme, “The Great Adventure: From Lagos to Japan,” brought to life the incredible voyages that connected Portugal to the far corners of the world.

Back in the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal was a small country with big dreams. Brave explorers like Prince Henry the Navigator, who made Lagos his base, helped launch a wave of sea voyages that changed the world. These daring sailors set off from Portuguese shores in tiny wooden ships, discovering new trade routes, mapping uncharted lands, and connecting cultures across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Lagos was right at the heart of it all – a buzzing port where explorers prepped for their journeys and tales of adventure filled the salty sea air.

The festivities kicked off with the lively Cortejo Histórico - a historical parade full of local flair, with cute costumed schoolkids, dancers, and actors marching along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos. There was also the Feira Quinhentista – a bustling 16th-century style market with crafts, food, and entertainment straight from the pages of history. We felt like we had stepped back in time, minus the seasickness and scurvy!

There was also music, theatre, and fire shows on stages across Lagos. From sword-fighting demos and Moorish camps to boat rides on replica caravels. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, the Festival of the Discoveries is a chance to experience the spirit of adventure that made tiny Portugal a global powerhouse.
