Exploring the gardens of the Castelo de Tavira

Perched on top of a hill overlooking the quaint town of Tavira in Portugal's Algarve region stands the Castelo de Tavira - an ancient fortress that offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich tapestry of the region's past. The history of the castle dates back to the Moorish era, when the region was under the rule of the Moors from North Africa.

Originally constructed in the 10th century, the castle served as a strategic stronghold, offering protection to the town and its inhabitants. Its elevated position afforded commanding views of the surrounding landscape, allowing its defenders to spot potential threats from afar.

Over the centuries, the Castelo de Tavira bore witness to numerous conquests and conflicts, each leaving its mark on the fortress's storied walls. In the 13th century, the castle fell into the hands of the Portuguese during the Reconquista, a period marked by Christian reclamation of the Iberian Peninsula from Moorish rule. Tavira flourished as a prosperous trading port during the Age of Discoveries, and the Castelo de Tavira played a crucial role in safeguarding the town's maritime interests. Its strategic location along the Gilão River ensured that it remained a key stronghold in the defence of the Algarve coastline against pirate raids and invasions.

Today, visitors to the Castelo de Tavira can explore its historic ramparts, towers, and battlements, but these days, the real beauty lies within. Inside the castle walls, a tranquil garden offers a peaceful retreat, providing a stark contrast to the fortress's martial origins. From the highest tower, panoramic views stretch out across the town and surrounding countryside, offering a breath-taking perspective of Tavira's timeless beauty.

When we visited, the gardens were in full bloom with roses, and beautiful bougainvillea bringing colour to the walls. If you find yourself in Tavira, the castle and its hidden gardens are a must visit - and the best thing is, they are also free!
