Euro 2024 Fever!

If you have never been in Portugal during an international football tournament, then you may not be aware, but football is like a religion here! As Euro 2024 approached, the buzz in Portugal was palpable. Most shop windows were decked out in red and green, and kids everywhere swapped their school uniforms for Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes jerseys!

With Scotland´s disappointing early exit, we couldn’t help but get swept up in the fervour! Match days were a spectacle in themselves. Streets emptied, and everyone gathered around the nearest TV screen. Every local bar or café was transformed into a little football haven, complete with a giant screen, extra seating, and enough Portuguese flags to outfit a parade!

As we live in a multi-cultural city, it has to be said it was not only the Portuguese team who were being celebrated. We have been in bars full of German and French fans celebrating as their Euro 2024 journey went on. We did watch the Scotland games from home though - we needed the sofa to hide behind, as we nervously watched our beloved team!

Of course, it wouldn’t be football without some heart-stopping moments. Penalty shootouts had us biting our nails and gripping our seats. The collective sighs of relief or groans of disappointment were a testament to how deeply everyone cared. After each match, the streets came alive with celebratory honking of car horns, and the odd firework or two. It felt like the whole country was united in joy and pride for their team.

Sadly that journey is now over but we have to say that living in Portugal during Euro 2024 has been an unforgettable experience. It's more than just football; it’s about community, culture, and a shared passion that brings everyone together. Win or lose, the spirit of the game and the passion the Portuguese have for the beautiful game has left a lasting impression on us!
