Easter in Portugal

Easter in Portugal is a time spent with family, is one of the most important festivals of the year in Portugal. As in the UK, both good Friday (Sexta-feira Santa) and Easter Sunday (Páscoa) are national holidays and the main days of the annual festivities.

The festival of Easter is celebrated all over Portugal and, as with almost all Portuguese celebrations, food plays an important part! Families often gather on Easter Sunday for a meal of roast lamb or goat.

There is also a traditional cake or bread called Folar da Páscoa, which can be sweet or savoury and is often served with a hard boiled egg to represent the resurrection, and a cross on top of the bread symbolising the crucifixion. Also eaten at Easter is Pão de Ló which is a simple sponge cake made from eggs, cinnamon, flour, lemon or orange zest and sugar. It was originally made by nun's in Portugal's convents.

The Portuguese love a celebration, and when it involves food, they go all out, so we plan to join in the fun this Easter and try all the local delicacies...it would be rude not to! Happy Easter to you all!
