The Algarve is not only about stunning beaches and cliff walks, but a trip to the mountain areas can also be captivating. In late 2023 the 'Barranco do Demo' boardwalk was officially opened, and is already a huge success having been visited over 30,000 times!

It is located beside nearby Alferce, a charming village nestled in the hills of Monchique. The
800m boardwalk and its suspended bridge were built in a beautiful gorge – sometimes referred to by locals as the 'Grand Canyon of Alferce'! The boardwalk is the highlight of a larger 6km walking trail around the village, and is part of a larger €450,000 project aimed at developing the parish.

The highlight of the walk is the suspended bridge - and don't be put off, I am terrified of heights, but this was definitely doable! Only 4 people are allowed on the bridge at one time, and waiting to cross gives you the opportunity to take in the sweeping countryside views.

For those keen to enjoy a different side of the Algarve, a visit to Alferce and the enchanting boardwalk is a must. The easiest way to locate it is to follow the signs near the village cemetery. A perfect way to spend a morning with a leisurely stroll amidst breathtaking scenery.
