Winter cycling with blue skies and quiet roads

There’s something fantastic about cycling in the Algarve during winter. While my friends in Northern Europe are layering up like Michelin men and braving icy roads (or spending all their time on Zwift!), I´m here in Portugal, zipping along quiet roads under a gloriously blue sky. Winter, you say? It feels more like a sunny cheat code for cyclists!

Granted, you’ll need a few extra layers compared to summer—arm warmers, a light jacket, and maybe some fingered gloves (shock horror!). But hey, if this is “cold,” I’ll take it. The roads are virtually deserted, the traffic light, and the scenery? It’s the stuff of cycling dreams.

Picture this: you’re pedalling past rugged cliffs that drop dramatically into blue seas. There are pristine beaches so empty they look like they’re waiting for a postcard photoshoot. The air carries a faint whiff of salt and in land, wait for it— oranges! That’s right, those endless groves of sun-dappled citrus trees are as delightful to ride through as they sound. You might even be tempted to stop and snag a stray fruit (we won’t tell).

The best part? You’re far, far away from the frozen chaos of Northern Europe. No slushy roads, no numbing rain. Just you, your bike, and miles of tarmac stretching ahead. And if you do spot a fellow cyclist, expect a cheery wave—cyclists here are a friendly bunch. Probably because they, too, can’t believe their luck!

So, this winter, trade icy puddles for endless blue skies. Swap damp commutes for sunlit adventures. The Algarve is waiting—and trust me, it’s better than central heating!
