In all the years we have been coming to Portugal, we have to say the last week or so has been the coldest we have experienced. January is generally a moderate month, with temperatures around 16 degrees during the day, and an average of 8 degrees at night.
For the ten days, we have had weather warnings because of the cold weather - which was caused by an anticyclone in Northern Europe carrying a cold continental air mass for the hole of the Iberian Peninsula. We even had frost on the roof of our car one morning - which was a big shock!
Thankfully these anticyclones (a weather system with high pressure at its centre) are associated with calm, fine weather and we have been lucky enough to be able to enjoy absolutely beautiful days, with stunning blue skies. Sunset is also now around 6pm, so we feel blissfully lucky.
When it's Winter in the Algarve, it's funny to imagine the high temperatures that we will experience in a few months time, so we will take the colder weather with sunny blue skies and have to remind ourselves that it is still not 'cold' compared to all the Januarys we spent in the UK!
