The treasures of Badajoz

Every so often, we love to take in a a cross border trip to Spain, and we recently found an amazing place. If you're in search of an off-the-beaten-path destination in Spain, look no further than Badajoz. Nestled in the western part of the country, very close to the Portuguese border, this charming city offers a delightful mix of history, culture, and natural beauty.

One of the most stunning places in Badajoz is Plaza Alta, which is a picturesque 17th-century square. This charming plaza is divided into two distinct sections- on the side adjacent to the citadel, you'll find soft brown and white decorative motifs adorning iconic structures such as the old town hall. On the opposite side of the square, is a striking contrast with vivid red and white facades, showcasing Moorish-inspired residences known as the Casas Coloradas.

Another highlight of Badajoz is the Alcazaba is a historically significant Moorish fortress and an iconic landmark. Dating back to the 9th century, it's a testament to the city's rich heritage and a captivating blend of Moorish, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural influences. Perched atop a hill, the Alcazaba offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the Guadiana River. You can explore its well-preserved walls, towers, and courtyards, each echoing tales of the region's past.

Even just experiencing the enchanting Old Town of Badajoz is fantastic - wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, you feel like you are being transported back in time as you take in the well-preserved medieval architecture.

Badajoz is a city waiting to be discovered. With its rich history, flavorful cuisine, cultural events, and natural beauty, it's a hidden gem in Spain that should be on every traveler's list. Our visit to this charming city surprised us, and I think we will return!
