One of the beaches close to where we live is the beautiful Praia da Luz, meaning beach of light. It is one of our favourite places to go out of high season when the summer holiday makers have departed and the peace has returned!
The cliffs here are beautiful, with so many different colours they look like they're striped! It really is a map of 120 million years of history, with green, red and even violet tones throughout the rocks. You'll also find lots of fossil shells here too. If you want a bit more peace and privacy here, you should head to the east side of the beach where you'll find the so-called Rocha Negra, or black rock.
This dark rock formation is the most unique part of the beach, and was formed about 150 million years ago by lava from a volcanic vein that extends from the Monchique mountains to the sea.
It is incredible how the black rock sticks out against the other rocks on the beach, and it looks especially beautiful during an early morning walk when the sun rising behind it makes it look even darker.
If you find yourself in this part of the Algarve, it's definitely worth taking a stroll along the beach and taking in the rock formations on the way. Even a hazy hot morning, as you can see from the photo above, can provide a beautiful backdrop to the wonderful Rocha Negra.
