Sweet Potato Obsession!

Nestled in the Algarve, the municipality of Aljezur is famed for its charm, stunning coastline, and, as we discovered, a passionate obsession with......sweet potatoes! We heard last year that the 'Festival da Batata-Doce' in Aljezur was really good fun. This year we attended....and we agree!

The region’s unique sandy soils and mild climate make it ideal for growing these golden treasures, specifically the Aljezur variety, known for its silky sweetness and creamy texture. What began as sustenance for farmers has blossomed into a culinary star. Who knew potatoes—of the sweet variety, no less—could inspire so much devotion?

Arriving at the festival, the air was thick with the warm, earthy scent of roasting sweet potatoes. Rows of vendors offered a dizzying array of treats: from sweet potato cakes, to pies, and traditional Portuguese meat dishes with the lovely potato either fried or boiled on the side. Each dish showcased the sweet potato’s versatility, proving it´s more than just an ordinary spud!

As we wandered through the festival, full and happy, I couldn’t help but laugh. Sweet potatoes are usually the sidekick—mashed, fried, or forgotten—but here, they’re the stars. Somewhere between trying a sweet potato cake and watching local kids play guitars and sing potato-themed songs, it hit us: this isn’t just a food festival. It’s a quirky tribute to tradition, community, and the surprising charm of the sweet potato. Who knew these humble veggies could steal the show? Only in Aljezur!
