Team Castaway are big fans of road trips. It's the perfect way to get to those magical remote places, and find wonderful locations that you wouldn't come across if you travelled by train or plane. As you may have read in our previous blog post about our journey to the Algarve; the lack of traffic is one of the best things about driving down here, and it came as no surprise to us to read that Portugal has been ranked as the best place to have a road trip in Europe.
Global travel research site Momondo analysed thirty one European countries, and rated them on 17 factors in several categories: weather, safety and infrastructure, price, car rental, and nature and attractions. Portugal was number one on several factors including road quality; abundance of nature, hours of sunshine, and the lack of air pollution.
We are not surprised! You can cover huge distances in a short space of time with very few other cars on the road, which means you can get to the places you want to, without the stress of traffic, and you also have more time to explore when you get there. There are two tips we have if you're thinking about driving in Portugal - 1. breathe all the fabulous scenery in; and 2. if you see somewhere you think looks interesting - just stop and discover...you never know what you might find! It's how we've found some of the wonderfully remote places that we'll share with you on the blog in the future.
