The Barra Lighthouse, or "Farol da Barra," stands as a proud sentinel on the coast near Aveiro. At an impressive 62 meters tall, it is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal and one of the tallest in Europe. Built between 1879 and 1893, the lighthouse has long been a beacon for sailors navigating the treacherous Atlantic waters, guiding ships safely to the shore.
Its distinctive red and white stripes make it a striking landmark against the coastal landscape, visible for miles around. Its light, which can be seen up to 50 kilometers away, has been a crucial navigational aid for over a century. In addition to its role in maritime safety, the Barra Lighthouse has become a cultural and touristic symbol of the region.
Visitors can tour the lighthouse, climb its 288 steps, and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the ocean, nearby beaches, and the surrounding coastline. If you are in the area, or simply passing through as we were, we highly recommend going to see the beautiful lighthouse, which remains an iconic part of Portugal’s maritime history.
