We are all about discovering new places, and since we started our Castaway Portugal journey nine months ago, we have upped the ante, as we try to show you some of the best bits of the country we love so much.

We recently read about the best places to visit in the Alentejo region, and Vila Viçosa was mentioned. It had for some reason escaped our notice, perhaps as it is about a four hour drive from the Algarve. We can tell you it is well worth the journey to what is commonly known as the 'Princess of the Alentejo'.

It really feels like a different world - and as you can see by the photo above it almost looks a little bit like France! It is grand; there is marble everywhere (more on that to come in future blog posts!), and we have to say it really took us by surprise - it is just beautiful.

There is a castle to visit; there are winding streets to explore, and as always in the Alentejo region - there are fantastic restaurants to discover! The portion sizes......oh my goodness, just as well we did a lot of walking to combat the calories!

If you are looking for a new place to explore, we think this is a great place to spend a few days. You will be blown away by what has been described as an open air museum! We will tell you all about the marble in a future blog post, but it's safe to say that Vila Viçosa took us by surprise - and we will return.
