Mouthwatering mountain munching

If you have ever visited Portugal you will know how important food is to the locals! Lunch here is rarely just a sandwich on the hop as it often is the UK - instead, the full lunch hour is enjoyed, and you regularly see workers having three courses at restaurants offering a menu of the day.

One tradition here that is similar to back home is going out for Sunday lunch. As in many countries, Sunday is a chance for families and friends to get together to share food and stories, and we have found the perfect place to do just that.

Luar da Foia is a fantastic restaurant up in the mountains of the Algarve. 29 years ago, it was nothing much more than a small wooden bar. Now - it is a simple but beautiful restaurant that very much makes the most of the local ingredients, and the stunning panoramic views which stretch right down to the coast.

They serve an incredible couvert of local cheese, olives and black pig presunto. The latter is some of the tastiest we have ever had!

The main courses are wide ranging, but we highly recommend going for a meat dish. Wild boar with chestnuts is a perfect winter option; black pork 'lizards' with asparagus bread mash is to die for at any time of the year, and the suckling pig is also one of our favourite specialities.

If you have space for dessert, the lime pie and chocolate mousse are our personal favourites. If the photo below doesn't make a chocolate lover's mouth water.....

If you are planning to be near Monchique, then you should definitely make a reservation here. you won't regret it. You might just need to take it easy for the rest of the day while your body digests the delicious food you will have gorged on!
