Christmas in the Algarve is one of the highlights of living here, and something we look forward to every year. Instead of the hustle and bustle that often comes with the season, we enjoy a more relaxed pace, taking time to stroll along the beaches or the clifftops, taking in the beauty of the coastline.
Forget the traditional Christmas pudding – here in the Algarve, the traditional dessert is the bolo-rei (king cake), a ring-shaped cake filled with dried fruits and nuts, and often decorated with candied fruits to resemble a crown. What makes it fun and unique is that hidden inside the cake is a small trinket or bean, and the person who finds it in their slice is expected to buy the bolo-rei for the next celebration!
One of our favourite things Christmas in the Algarve is that, unlike in many other parts of Europe, it's common to be able to enjoying outdoor activities on Christmas Day due to the mild winter weather. Many families head to the beach for a festive walk or even a picnic, taking advantage of the sunny skies and temperatures that can often reach into the mid to high-teens.
