How to experience Monsaraz at its best

Monsaraz is a picturesque medieval village which sits on top of a hill overlooking the vast plains of the Alentejo, near the border with Spain. We have visited this beautiful spot before, but on our previous trips we did not stay in the centre of the village.

On this occasion, we did just that, and it was wonderful to experience how great it is when the day trippers have all gone home!

Its strategic location overlooking the Guadiana River made Monsaraz an important stronghold, with defensive walls and a castle providing protection against invaders. One of the nicest things to do when you stay in the village is to wander the streets both early in the morning, and also just after the sun has set.

At those times, you have the place to yourself – in the morning we made the most of being able to explore the castle all by ourselves! It is perched at the highest point of the village and offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape.

At night, the sky was a vivid blue, and provided the perfect backdrop for the buildings that are lit up around the village. Here, it feels like time has stood still. It is a peaceful place, and whether you are exploring its medieval streets, admiring its architectural treasures, or simply taking in the sweeping views, a visit to Monsaraz is an unforgettable journey back in time.
