One of the main reasons for moving to Portugal was to enjoy the weather, especially after twenty years of the rainy climate in Manchester. The average temperature in August in the Algarve is 32 degrees; but we encountered something altogether different when we arrived, as you can see by the front page of The Portugal News below! You might have read in our Driving to the dream blog post last week, the mercury hit 42 degrees on our drive through Central Portugal - a challenge for both us, and the air-con in the car!
When we reached the Algarve, it was a teeny bit cooler, but night-time temperatures were still in the high twenties which anyone who has been to the region will know is quite unusual. What is not abnormal is the heatwaves. This one was caused by a mass of hot air from the North of Africa, causing temperatures to increase across the country. While we're still slapping on the factor 30 sun lotion, it is much more pleasant now, and we can do a lot more than just lie down with a cold bottle of water in hand!
