The wine harvest in Douro is an unforgettable experience, especially for first-time visitors like ourselves. If you are not familiar with the region, it is located in northern Portugal, primarily along the Douro River and its tributaries.
It extends from the city of Porto inland towards the eastern border with Spain. It is known for its steep terraced vineyards that produce grapes for Port, and Douro wines, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the world.
September is a wonderful time to visit, as the beautiful terraces are bustling with activity. The sight of rows upon rows of vines heavy with grapes, ready to be plucked, is quite amazing. What we didn´t expect was the terraces to go from the riverside, right up to the top of the hills, and knowing the hard work that must go into the process definitely adds a deeper appreciation for the meticulous process behind each bottle of Douro wine or Port!
For anyone with a love for wine and a desire to connect with Portugal's rich cultural heritage, experiencing the wine harvest in Douro is a must. It's a journey that unfolds with each grape picked; each glass raised, and each moment savoured. A place that every wine lover should visit, and experience the beautiful surroundings, and the artistry of winemaking in one of the world's most breath-taking wine regions.
