Recently, I went on a solo cycling trip to Moura, in the heart of Portugal´s Alentejo. I love getting away for a few days, and exploring the untamed beauty of the region. It´s also great to discover new routes on my bike.
Pedalling through the expansive plains and rolling hills, I found myself in a landscape where the rugged charm of cork oak forests meets the olive groves, which stretch as far as the eye can see.
You also never know what you're going to come across - but there was a great photo opportunity with a military vehicle, marking the 25 April when the Portuguese conquered their freedom.
It was always going to be a challenge to head there at this time of the year. The Alentejo sun is unrelenting in its warmth, and made for some challenging rides - even getting up super early provides only the slightest bit of respite from the heat!
It wasn´t all pedalling and no pleasure though! I also took time to reminded myself why we love the Alentejo, and its reputation for delicious food. A few days away is something I love to try to do each year, and this trip around Moura was not just a physical journey but also a chance to discover some of Alentejo's natural wonders, culinary delights, and warm-hearted culture - a fantastic change of scenery!
