If you've ever been to Portugal, you will be well aware of the abundance of incredible wine that is made in the country, and the fantastic low prices. It is world famous for its fortified wines of Port and Madeira, but Portugal also produces a stunning range of red and white wines.
It comes as no surprise to us that Portugal is the country in the world that consumes the most wine per capita in the world, and consumption is increasing! Portugal has been going through a wine revolution in the last couple of decades, and annual production is at 600 million litres of wine, with 480,000 acres of vineyards!
Historically, Portugal's place in the wine world centred around its cork production. Now, the Portuguese cork industry is struggling, due to the introduction of plastic corks and metal screwcaps. The good news is that the wine industry is buoyant.
Only around half of the wine produced is exported, meaning there are an incredible range of wines only available in Portugal. We rarely pay more than 4 euros for a bottle of wine in the supermarkets - you just don't need to, the quality of the wines under that price are fantastic. Do you really need another excuse to visit?!
