A Celebration of Freedom

Every year, close to April 25th, we like to mark the moment on our blog as it is a hugely important moment for Portugal. Each year, the country celebrates Liberation Day (Dia da Liberdade). This national holiday marks the anniversary of the 1974 Carnation Revolution, a peaceful military coup that ended decades of dictatorship and paved the way for democracy.

The Carnation Revolution is taught in schools, with children making pieces of art to celebrate the day. It got its name because red carnations were placed in the barrels of soldiers' rifles, symbolizing peace and unity. It’s a poignant reminder of how powerful a peaceful movement can be. Today, you’ll still see carnations everywhere—worn, carried, and placed at monuments in honour of those who fought for freedom.

In one tiny village we visited last year, the community came together for a lively display featuring a local band, with the older members of the community proudly handing out carnations to everyone in the crowd. It was a heart warming reminder of the day’s significance and the deep sense of pride shared across generations.

Liberation Day is marked by parades, concerts, and cultural events in cities and towns across Portugal. Lisbon hosts one of the largest parades, with people gathering along Avenida da Liberdade (fittingly named!) to sing revolutionary songs and wave flags. It’s not just a celebration of the past but also a reflection of the values of democracy and equality that continue to shape Portugal today.

While the day is festive, it’s also a time for reflection. Many families and schools take the opportunity to share stories about life before the revolution, ensuring that younger generations understand the importance of protecting freedom. If you’re in Portugal on April 25th, soak it all in— it’s a day to remember how far Portugal has come and to honour the spirit of unity and hope that continues to inspire.
